Appraisal Information

The Borthwick Institute aims to hold all the case notes of patients admitted, discharged or dying at the Retreat before and up to the year 1960, while the case notes of patients admitted, discharged or dying from 1961 onwards are at the Retreat.
The bulk of the 20th century case notes at the Borthwick are in the series RET 6/5/4 (original Retreat box numbers 1-107 and MD 1-248).
But note that some of the boxes of case note folders transferred to the Borthwick in that series included a few case notes of patients admitted, discharged or dying after 1960 which happened to be filed in the same alphabetical sequence as the pre-1960 notes. And occasionally files of pre-1960 admissions which ought to be in the boxes cannot be located.
The series here in RET 6/5/5 consists of case notes originally filed in original Retreat box numbers later than MD 248, but which relate to pre-1960 admissions with death and discharge dates after 1960, and which have been transferred to the Borthwick for the sake of consistency in date coverage.
Some of these case files are incomplete and so the date of discharge or death of patient is not clear.
