Scope and Content

Thanking Professor Stones for letters from F W Maitland, J H Round and F Liebermann, stating that he now has twenty of Maitland's letters and is still hopeful that the Selden Society will publish; discussing his Life of Maitland , written with encouragement from Professor Helen Cam, and turned down by the Cambridge University Press "on the ground that it was a biography and not what I assume they wanted – a critical analysis of Maitland's work", for which, "I did not feel myself qualified"; stating that the idea of a biography had been suggested by Maitland's daughter, Ermengard; and ending by discussing other possible publishers.
