Scope and Content

Records of the Barry Borough Council, 1894-1974, including minutes of the borough council and committees, and of its predecessors, 1894-1974; clerk's filing, letter books, education filing, letter books, and accounts, 1903-1945; private street works plans, 1875-1914; building regulation plans, c1880s-c1910s (incomplete series) and abstract of accounts, 1899-1967.

Administrative / Biographical History

Barry (Glamorgan), was incorporated as a Municipal Borough by royal charter in September 1939. The Borough was the successor to Barry and Cadoxton Local Board (1888-1894) and Barry Urban District Council (1894-1939). The area covered by the borough comprised Barry, Cadoxton-juxta-Barry, Merthyr Dyfan and parts of Penmark, Porthkerry and Sully. In 1974, it was abolished and its functions taken over by the Vale of Glamorgan District Council and South Glamorgan County Council.

Most of the records are open. However, some of the records contain material of a sensitive nature relating to named individuals. These records are closed to the public for 100 years, at the discretion of the Glamorgan Archivist.

Transferred by the Barry and Codoxton Local Board, Barry Urban District Council, Barry Borough Council and successor authorities at various dates.
