Material relating to the slavery abolition movement. Includes newspaper cuttings from the nineteenth century; letters and papers used in Parliamentary reports on the slave trade from 1814; accounts of Parliamentary debates and investigations; pamphlets written by Thomas Clarkson, William Wilberforce and other campaigners; pamphlets printed by the Anti Slavery Society in the 1970s; contemporary pamphlets and articles on abolition; material on events commemorating the 150th anniversary of Clarkson's death; contemporary records relating to slave ownership.

The content of much of the material in this collection is distressing. Language today considered racially insensitive was deployed by white slaveowners and abolitionists alike. It should be stressed that any use of the word ‘slave’ in catalogue records is not intended to reduce any individual person to being defined by their enslaved status.
