School log books, 1863-2004; admission registers, 1836-2006; school managers' minute books, 1842-1998; financial and account books, 1813-1972; school building grant plans, 1845-1872; summary registers, 1868-1994; secondary school records, 1897-1999; School Board records, 1871-1904; Grammar school records, 1875-1999; and miscellaneous papers (education), 1843-2007.

Administrative / Biographical History

Flintshire County Council was established by the Local Government (County Councils) Act 1888. Under the Education Act 1902, the Council became responsible as Local Education Authority for elementary schools, previously administered by local School Boards, and for secondary schools. The Authority dealt with Hawarden Grammar and High School, Mold Grammar School, Rhyl Grammar School, Rhyl County and District Intermediate Schools, Holywell County School, St Asaph Grammar School, and Deeside Senior High School, Queensferry.

Arranged into the following: school log books; admission registers; school managers' minute books; financial and account books; summary registers; secondary school records; School Board records; grammar school records; and miscellaneous papers (education).

Conditions Governing Access

Data Protection Act restrictions will apply to any items less than 75 years old (relating to children) or 100 years old (for adults) that contain personal information as defined by the Act.

Custodial History

Plans of schools were deposited with the Board of Education, 1845-1872, in connection with grants for their construction and alteration; presented to the Record Office by the Department of Education and Science under section 3(6) of the Public Records Act, 1958 (AN 565); St Asaph records are on indefinite loan from Mrs. G. Rhys Jones, The Mount, St Asaph per Mrs. B. Wheeler, Parc Postyn, Prior, Denbigh, 28th September 1979; grammar school records were loaned and deposited from various people between 1979-2000.
