Administrative / Biographical History

The Central Labour College was founded in 1909 as a result of the Ruskin College strike. Its two principal trade union supporters were the National Union of Railwaymen and the South Wales Miners' Federation. In 1911 it moved to London and acquired an extension in Kew in 1920. The college closed in 1929.

Chapter 10 of W.W. Craik, The Central Labour College 1909-1929 (London. 1964).  explains the evolution of local tutorial classes or "Labour Colleges" and the establishment of the National Council of Labour Colleges in 1922 as a co-ordinating body.

This collection was deposited in the Centre by Tony Mason of the Centre for the Study of Social History, University of Warwick in 1982.
