Administrative / Biographical History

John Wardle was a yeoman farmer from Gilberdyke who married Ann Dudding from Scalby, later inheriting land in Scalby through her father, John Dudding (also a yeomn farmer). Some of the papers in the collection relate to land on what was Bishopsoil common, drained in 1767. An extract from the 1777 Bishopsoil enclosure award is amongst the papers (Pevsner & Neave, York and the East Riding, p.437).
