Hubert von Ranke, son of Graves's uncle Harry von Ranke, summarises his life to date: having resisted Hitler and been imprisoned in a concentration camp, he left Germany for France in 1934; he then went to fight in the Spanish civil war, but fell ill and disenchanted with the communist party; he returned to France in 1938, joined the French army and then the resistance in Savoy; he currently works for the journal 'Esprit'. He passes on some family news.
