Berwick and Tweedmouth Savings Bank

Scope and Content

Management records of the Berwick and Tweedmouth Savings Bank including minute books, general ledgers etc.

Administrative / Biographical History

Berwick and Tweedmouth Savings Bank was opened on 19 February 1816. Shortly after the Berwick managers reported grateful customers remarking 'had it not been for the Savings Bank we should, in all probability, have been forced to apply to the parish for relief.' (Moss and Russell, p.43).

In 1927 Berwick and Tweedmouth Savings Bank amalgamated with the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Savings Bank.

This became part of the Northumberland and Durham TSB in 1971, which in turn became part of TSB North East in 1975 following a company restructure. The Berwick-upon-Tweed branch resides at 47 Hide Hill.
