School of Medicine, 1903-36

Scope and Content

The School of Medicine opened in October 1893. By 1897 the College had created a Faculty of Medicine. It provided for the first two years of medical training, after which students had to go on to another University for the rest of their training. UCSWM was given a large donation of money to provide facilities for what they thought would be the National School of Medicine for Wales but the Haldane Report of 1918 recommended that the Medical School should be a separate organisation within the University of Wales. Disagreements continued until 1931 when the independent Welsh National School of Medicine was opened. Certain pre-clinical courses still ran at UCSWM.
