Administrative / Biographical History

The Great Western Railway Company took over the Llanelly Railway and Dock Co. railways serving Llanelli and Burry Port in 1873, and it was absorbed into the GWR in 1889. These small railways were used in the export of coal. The GWR also took over Burry Port docks, originally opened in 1820.
