REGISTRATION OF VOTERS

Scope and Content

Representation of the People Act 1918 (7&8 Geo V c 64) designated Clerks of County Councils & Town Clerks Registration Officers responsible for compiling combined lists of parliamentary & local govt electors; scale of fees laid down by Treasury.

This Act superseded the Registration Act 1843 (6&7 Vict c 18) under which annual lists were compiled by parish overseers and returned to the Clerk of Peace or Town Clerk; the lists were subject to revision in courts held by specially-appointed barristers; copies were printed, published and sent to Sheriffs.

Under the 1918 Act, assistant overseers continued to compile local lists & the system of revising courts adjudicated by revising barristers continued.

From 1927, registration assistants replace assistant overseers - see Memoranda/Newscuttings books.
