Material about Mansfield collected by Dr E.R.Ward. Charles Brachfield Mansfield (1819-55) was born in Rowner, Hampshire and educated at Winchester College and Clare College, Cambridge, before moving on to study chemistry at Royal College, London, 1846-8. After completing this course Mansfield undertook a series of experiments which resulted in the extraction of benzol from coal tar, leading to the foundation of the aniline industry. In 1851, Mansfield published a work on Aerial navigation.
