Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
In 1849, James Arthur and Hugh Fraser opened a drapery store specialising in silk, linens and woollens. They rented premises for the store on the first floor of a mansion at the corner of Buchanan Street and Argyle Street in Glasgow, Scotland. From this company came House of Fraser Ltd, which continues, in 2011, to trade from premises in Buchanan Street, Glasgow.
Over the course of its 160 year history, the House of Fraser expanded into one of Britain's largest and most successful department store retailers. Through the acquisition of other retailers, House of Fraser gained a presence in towns and cities the length and breadth of the United Kingdom.
Full details of the history of House of Fraser and its subsidiary companies can be found through the online catalogue available at www.housefraserarchive.ac.uk .
