Billing book for the period 1823-1840, alphabetically ordered; three journals 1831-1840 which provide daily accounts of Empson's travels and two day books 1829-1841 filled with his daily transactions.

Administrative / Biographical History

The account books and journals of Matthew Empson, solicitor of Beverley, arrived in the Brynmor Jones Library in 1974 as part of the large solicitors' papers of Crust Todd and Mills catalogued as DDCV. These very complete records, covering Empson's business between 1823 and 1841, provide valuable information both about the daily work of a solicitor in a market town and about the inhabitants of Beverley itself.
