Administrative / Biographical History

The North Wales coalfield covers the counties of Denbighshire, Flintshire and Shropshire. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the coalfield was mined by a number of private collieries, including Brynkinalt Colliery Co., Llay Main Collieries Ltd, Broughton and Plas Power Coal Co., and Ruabon Coal and Coke Company. From 1947, the coal industry was nationalised, and was run by the National Coal Board. In 1986, it was renamed the British Coal Corporation. Collieries in the area included Gresford, Llay Hall, Llay Main, Black Park, Bersham Colliery, owned by Broughton and Plas Power Coal Co., all in Denbighshire, Point of Ayr in Flintshire and Ifton in Shropshire. In 1994, the British Coal Corporation was replaced by a privatised coal operating company, British Coal, and a separate licensing and supervisory body, the Coal Authority.
