Catalogues of Shells

Scope and Content

There are three catalogues of shell collections compiled by A.H. Cooke:

  • Catalogue of Shells from the European Seas in the MacAndrew Collection (M6). It is a list of species in systematic order (199 pages). Robert MacAndrew (1802-1873) bequeathed his collection of shells (over 16000 specimens) to the museum in 1873.
  • Temporary Catalogue of Genera of Mollusca in the Mac Andrew and Saul Collections (M7). This is an alphabetical list of genera, with the physical location of shells pertaining to it (ca. 100 pages). Robert MacAndrew (1802-1873) bequeathed his collection of shells (over 16000 specimens) to the museum in 1873. Jane Saul's (1807-1895) collection was another bequest received in 1895.
  • A Catalogue of Shells in Collection of the Rev. Richard T. Lowe (1882) (M9). It is a list of species collected in Madeira and the Canaries (28 pages). Richard Thomas Lowe (1802-1874) was Chaplain to the English Church in Madeira 1833-1847.

Administrative / Biographical History

Alfred Hands Cooke (1854-1934) was Curator at the University Museum of Zoology, Cambridge from 1880 to 1899. Afterwards he was Headmaster of Aldenham School.

Manuscripts can be consulted on appointment only. The Museum of Zoology is open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 17:00 pm. Access and reproduction is at the discretion of the Archivist.
