Letter: John Edwards, 21 Clarendon Road, Egremont to his uncle and cousins

Scope and Content

LETTER: John Edwards, 21 Clarendon Road, Egremont to his uncle and cousins informing them that he had finished with 39 Brunswick St., except for having a reference. He had had a long chat with Frances and Co. and he was to let them know his decision in a week or so: Both partners talked matters over favourably to his side, as he understood they had good connections and they could give him plenty to do and offer 30s. per week and 25% commission. Since then he had seen their late chartering clerk who had not given a good account of them. He had since seen his cousin John D. Thomas who confirmed what the clerk had said but had intended to try Messrs. Frances and Co. again rather than be out altogether. Every Captain he met wanted him to start by himself and if all who he had seen kept their promise he was convinced it would be a good success. He had found a suitable office, he asks for his uncle and cousin's views and asks what they think of the name John Edwards and Co.
