London and Globe Telephone Maintenance Company Limited

Scope and Content

This collection consists of phone books and secretariat records.

Administrative / Biographical History

Established in 1881 as a rival to the United Telephone Company (UTC). The London and Globe requested that the UTC remove its wires which crossed the Wool Exchange where the London and Globe was based but the UTC ignored this request. As a result the London and Globe deliberately caused annoyance to the UTC's customers by faulting the offending wires. The two companies engaged in long running legal case over patent rights. This was eventually settled when the UTC acquired the London and Globe and all of its patent rights on 24 June 1884.
