Adrian Mealing 'Ian McMillan' Memorabilia

This collection of memorabilia held by McMillan's touring manager includes copies of his poetry and non-fiction publications. It also includes publicity material, press releases and reviews of his projects and live performances from postcards to large format advertising posters. A small and not comprehensive collection of his, audio, video and radio broadcasts is also included. This covers his career from the early 1990s until 2010 when the collection was deposited with the archive.

This collection was catalogued by Helen Bates, Archives Volunteer, in September 2014, under the guidance of Lindsay Ince, Assistant Archivist & Records Manager.

Ian McMillan (b.1958) is a Darfield (near Barnsley) born poet who began performing in the 1970s. He graduated in Modern Studies from the North Staffordshire Polytechnic in 1978 and is an enthusiastic advocate of poetry for all ages. He has published volumes of poetry for adults and children, and has addressed the character of Yorkshire speech and dialect in his work. His work often takes on a humerous form, and he is 'poet-in-residence' to a number of organisations, including Barnsley Football Club and the English National Opera. He has written for a number of popular publications, including Q and Mojo, and presents a number of programmes on BBCRadio, including The Verb and Ian McMillan's Writing Lab. He was also previously part of a spoken word and music ensemble called the Ian McMillan orchestra.

This collection of memorabilia was in the possession of Adrian Mealing, founder of the company UK Touring, who managed Mcmillan's live performances. It was purchased by the university in 2010, to reflect the writings from and about a local poet. Some duplicate material was disposed of during the cataloguing process.
