Josephine Butler to Miss Forsaith

Scope and Content

Photocopy of incomplete letter. Written from Cheltenham.

She has had 'four weeks of great suffering...I am really run down by heart ache and cannot eat enough to keep up my strength'. Begs her not to mention it to anyone as she has not enough strength to answer letters of enquiry. Quotes a saying of Mme Gingins about suffering 'He does not give chloroform'.

Administrative / Biographical History

'I am really run down by heartache and cannot eat enough to keep up my strength'

JB uses much the same expression in letter of [14 Apr 1902]

Charlie was of course the cause of this heart searching - presumably he found himself unable to support his wife and children. See also letter of 18 Oct
