Josephine Butler to Stanley Butler

'What a pity that a place like Dundee should be preferred to ... a University like St Andrews'

Would like to hear more from him about the decision that has gone against St Andrews and hopes it will not affect his income in any way. Thinks that Lord Bute and the Duke of Argyll will be sorry about it. She is going to Neuchatel for Christmas to be near the Humberts and then perhaps try to return home in Jan.

News of Charlie through Margaret Talbot (his fiancee) is that he hopes to return home in Jan or Feb. Refers to Stead's article on Chamberlain over the Jameson raid and the repercussions on the Continent.

Administrative / Biographical History

The dispute between St Andrews and Dundee universities as to the fields of interest covered by each was finally settled during the time James Stuart was Lord Rector of St Andrews (1898-1901). For details of this see J Stuart's 'Autobiography' p 135.
