Photocopy of a letter. Written from Hare Street House, Buntingford.

Says he will do his best to meet Prof. Butler if he can be of any service.

Administrative / Biographical History

18 Sep [1910] - In the DNB entry for RH Benson: 'Benson bought and quaintly adorned an old house at Hare St., Buntingford, Hertfordshire, where he lived from 1908 till his death [in 1914].'

This would give a date for the letter any time between 1908-1914. This rules out JB as she died at the end of 1906.

This would suggest that the letter is addressed to the wife of Prof. Butler, Mrs Rhoda Butler. Another puzzle is Benson's reference to 'All Saints Church' in Fulham Rd. This was the parish church of Fulham; it was dedicated to All Saints but usually known just as Fulham Parish Church. RH Benson was a priest of the Church of England from 1895-1903. In Sep of that year he was received into the Roman Communion; so why should he be visiting 'All Saints Church in Fulham Rd.' and request Rhoda Butler to send him a letter there?
