Written from Birmingham. Asks if he will befriend by a word of good cheer or help by advice a former business friend (Mr Coppack) of his who was formerly a coal merchant at Birmingham and then was unfortunate in business and has lately gone to Sheffield on the Staff of the 'Look Out', a new ld. Paper. He has written to Mrs Butler about a date for Conference there. Jesse Herbert 'is preparing a manifesto from out Committee on the Committee's report, which I expect will be a valuable document.'

Administrative / Biographical History

'A gentleman who has been engaged with Mr Stansfeld in getting up evidence for the House of Commons Committee on the CD Acts.' The Select Committee of the House of Commons appointed to enquire into the working of the Acts issued a Report, 1 Aug 1882. See Note on this, letter of 30 Oct 1882, JB to Mrs Tanner. '... Mrs Butler asking her to fix a date for Conference here.' This was the Conference held at Birmingham 7 Nov 1882 to decide what should be done to stimulate action in all the Repeal Societies.
