Administrative / Biographical History

'I hope that your brother whose labours at Haileybury will be always remembered, is better' - This was Arthur Gray Butler (1831-1909) 3rd son of George Butler, dean of Peterborough. On the reconstitution of Haileybury in 1862 he was appointed first Headmaster. A breakdown in health compelled his resignation in Dec 1867. He had by then raised Haileybury to a recognised place among great English Public Schools
