Josephine Butler to Rhoda Butler

Scope and Content

Photocopy of incomplete letter. Written from Balham.

She has found a bedroom for Mary (the nurse) with very 'good people' opposite. Thinks she may perhaps have to go abroad before the winter closes down; already the fogs are beginning and her weak lungs cannot stand them when accompanied with cold. Has just had a request from the great painter Watts, asking if she could give him a week in Oct as he wishes to make a portrait of her. He aims at doing gradually portraits of people who are known to the public and then leaving them all to the nation.
