Scope and Content

Written from Valleyfield, Forggatt, Near Sheffield

Enclosing copies of two papers concerning JB. One is a copy of the Memorandum signed by Josephine Butler and addressed to her sons making it a special request that they will forbid anyone to write a memoir of her: 'It is my desire that nothing personal should ever be brought before the public'. The second is a copy of a letter written by GG Butler to W Lyon Blease, 1 Jan 1912 enclosing a copy of his mother's memorandum, and saying that as she has so strictly charged her sons they can do nothing but follow out her wishes

Dr Wilson advises that a copy of JB's memorandum be pasted inside the lid of the box containing her letters and papers. 'Then anyone who deals with them will know just what they are up against'
