The accounts of the suffering of the Jews in Russia are heart rending; people say the Jews are usurers and deal hardly with people but nothing justifies torture and murder. The Cossacks are demons. She then goes on to recount their past intercourse with noble Jews in England (her late husband was an ardent Hebrew scholar). On one occasion he asked her to go for him to see the chief Rabbi who sent her on to Mr Montague who bestowed on her an hour of 'Bible lesson'.
