Henry Wilson to the Executive of the Northern Counties League

Scope and Content

Copy of report on the consultation in London on 29 Jul 1875. James Stansfeld presided and letters containing valuable suggestions and advice were read from Josephine Butler and Messrs Backhouse, Edmondson and Collingwood. Discussion and final voting took place on:

1 best methods of promoting unity of action and preventing waste of money and time by repetition of work

2 electoral action

3 separate working men's associations

4 petitions and memorials (carried as desirable though Wilson disagreed)

5 work in subjected districts - no resolutions passed - the subject needed to be taken up again

Over tea, Wilson and Gledstone had a long conversation with the representatives of the Working Men's League. Not much progress made. Wishes to propose that their Annual Meeting should be held at Sheffield in 1875. Will they please vote on this
