Administrative / Biographical History

'telling her that notes will be sent to Liverpool as soon as she will be at home' - Cheques were in general use at this period (there is frequent mention of them in the letters of Rev and Mrs Butler) but the donors of the gift to the Butlers probably preferred to give it in notes so that it was not associated with one name. Notes of £5, £10, £20, £50, £100 and £1000 were issued at this period
