Josephine Butler to Mrs Helen Clark

Scope and Content

Written from Wimbledon. Affectionately thanks her for her wonderful sympathy and thought for her: 'your loving gift quite sets me up and will make my mind easy about travelling and staying abroad'. She has been very ill, but is beginning to work again.

Administrative / Biographical History

This letter obviously follows on from her serious illness of the winter of 1892 when she was at death's door Jan and Feb and still very weak in Apr. In her own words in Dawn (Jan 1893 p 1): 'The year past has been a difficult and an eventful one for me. For nearly four months is the early part of the year I was incapable of any work, owning to severe illness. I continued to be very weak until the summer when a visit to Switzerland restored me.'
