Suggests coming to them in three days and going on from them to other visits. She had hoped to visit Charles but he has been laid up with lumbago.

Date: 1901 fits in with the many visits JB was making that year. Also the age of Rosalind, the child of Charles and Margaret (m. Aug 1897), who talks and walks as if three. [See note to letter of 8 Dec where the child's age is given.] Also 4 Nov is a Monday in 1901.

'Charles and his wife and dear child' Charles Butler, JB's youngest son, married Margaret Talbot in Aug 1897. Rosalind, their first child, was born 1898.

'their cottage is so small' This was in Devonshire '7 miles from anything like a town'
