Written from Liverpool. Mrs Butler directed him to say that if Madame Venturi proposes to hold the Annual Meeting of the Vigilance Association at Sheffield, she (JB) supported it; and that she wants Mrs Elmy (Miss Wolstenholme) to be made editor of 'The Shield' as Madame Venturi wants to retire. Emma is still with them; has to confess that he has 'lost all hope of her continuing to behave herself as a reasonable being anywhere for any length of time'.
Notes: 'Mrs Butler wants Mrs Elmy to return to that secretaryship'.
See letter of 5 Sep 1875 Josephine Butler to Miss Priestman in which she recounts that Miss Wolstenholme (Mrs Elmy) is resigning her secretaryship of The Vigilance Association and asks Miss Priestman to take it on temporarily.
'Thinks that Mr Elmy should be made Editor of 'The Shield' as Madame Venturi wishes to retire.' See letter of 3 Jul 1875 Josephine Butler (through Mr Llewelyn) to Mrs Wilson to say that she has just received a bill from Mr Banks for £109 being the Ladies' National Association's share of loss on 'The Shield' for one year.
