Josephine Butler to [Miss Priestman or Mrs Tanner]

Scope and Content

Written from Hotel Faucon, Lausanne. No year given but reference to 'Declaration' implies 1896.

She criticises some of the wording and suggest amendments. She thinks Mr Stuart has a habit 'of seasoning my combative expressions with his extreme Scotch caution'. One word however must go: 'the word lamenting'. The Ladies' National Association should never lament. Refuses to sign unless that word omitted.
