Extract of letter. Written in pencil. Addressed to Sheffield. She writes in great physical distress: 'I have not written a word till this...My head is not a bit better yet...It seems like John Bright's attack ...I am quite stunned'. She suggests that the true friends of the Cause might engage together in prayer for her recovery. She longs to be well 'for the sake of my beloved outcasts whom few love as I love them'.

In the course of his political career John Bright (1811-1889) had two breakdowns, one in 1856, when he 'could neither read, write, nor converse for more than a few minutes; and the second in 1870 necessitating his absence from political life till Apr 1872. (DNB)
