'The published statistics from India have made me anxious about the working of our movement'

One memorial signed by a number of titled ladies (known as the 'Princesses' memorial) in favour of Regulation being re-introduced in India was a great blow to Josephine and her supporters. Martineau was sending a donation distinct from his regular subscription.

In 1897 there was a scare with regard to increase of venereal disease among the British army in India with accompanying statistics and reports in the English papers. (See 'Rough Record' 1 Feb 1897 no 791; 19 Feb no 809; 29 Mar no 824 25 May 1897 no 854)
