Written from Halifax. Thinks it important that Mr Wilson should always be called in public, Secretary to and representing the League. MPs will weigh the fact of these Leagues as worth something. Other business referred to.

Administrative / Biographical History

'Swan will tell you he has been up on (Alliance) similar business before' - The Alliance is the UK Alliance founded in 1853 for the total suppression of the liquor traffic. Swan was taken on as Agent to the NCL early in 1853 - he had done work for the 'Alliance' under the Sec Mr Raper and was suggested as being suitable for the post of Agent to the Society. (See letter of 20 Jan 1873, Mr HJ Wilson reporting to his Executive, and asking for their approval or not of his action over engaging Agents)

'Lacon' - Mr J Lacon was one of the men applying for the post of Agent to the NCL. In a letter of 20 Jan 1873 Mr HJ Wilson to his Executive lists the three men and gives their qualifications. They were Mr WT Swan, Mr J Lacon and Mr MW Burgess. Swan was recommended to be taken on at once and the other two to be considered
