Date: 'The Fenians ... processions and public speaking at which they held up Allen & co as martyrs'

In Sep 1867 an attempt was made by 5 revolutionaries in Manchester to rescue 2 of their fellow conspirators from a prison van. In the course of this attempt a policeman was shot dead and 5 Fenians were arrested.: London, Allen, Larkin, Maguire and O'Brien. On 23 Nov Allen, Larkin and Maguire were hanged. Date of letter therefore probably end of Nov or sometime early in Dec 1867.

'Conty' (Constance) was a sister of Edith Leupold and therefore a niece of JB's. She had married John Baldwin
