Josephine Butler to 'Dear Friend' [Miss Priestman]

Scope and Content

Written from Liverpool. Can she help? Charlie is ill and the school doctor says he must come home, but she is ill and can hardly write, let alone travel. Does not know what the school is arranging but he must travel lying down and have someone with him.

Administrative / Biographical History

'Charlie is ill.'

This was Charles, the Butler's youngest son (b 1857) who with his constant illnesses was a continual worry to his mother. (See letter of 4 May [1874]). In Sep 1874 his parents sent him to Clifton College in the hope this part of England would agree with him better than Liverpool. All in vain as this letter shows.

Date: In relation to the other correspondence about Charlie's illness this letter of Tuesday is likely to be Jun 15.
