Josephine Butler to 'Dear Friend' [Miss Forsaith]

Scope and Content

Photocopy of a letter. Written from [Wooler, Northumberland].

She cannot yet tell her what has happened to their family, only that it is not the result of 'sinful action'.

Administrative / Biographical History

Sunday evening [1 Aug 1906]

'I could not yet tell you what has happened to our family.' JB gets on to talk of an accident and mangled bodies. Perhaps a railway accident, which involved some or all of the family?

'Those poor women suffrage women, fighting a war of violence.'

A similar reference to suffrage women occurs in letter of [Oct 1903] with a note on the beginnings of militancy and the formation of the Women's Social and Political Union.
