Josephine Butler to Rhoda Butler

Scope and Content

Photocopy letter. Written from Ewart Park, Northumberland.

Grieved to hear she has trouble with servants and illness, also gossiping and spiteful tongues. Josephine had suffered from the latter in the course of her life. She 'felt it most once at the Harrow speeches when all Uncle George's old friends (except one) turned their backs on me literally, and avoided having to speak to me. It made him unhappy for weeks.' Let her have courage and patience; she has 'some good and loyal friends'. She is going home to Balham the following Monday.
