29 Aug 1885.' I have been up to Murren, with Emile Boss, to see the Church.' The Butlers usually paid a visit to Grindelwald when they went to Switzerland. In 'Recollections of George Butler' by his wife she writes: 'Two years previously it had entered my husband's mind that a church was required at Grindelwald for the yearly increasing number of visitors who went there, and he set himself to promote the building of one' (p.399). A Committee was formed with the Canon as Secretary and the building began. After his bad illness the winter of 1885-1886 the Canon handed over the duties of Secretary to his son George (see letters of 19 & 28 Mar 1886). At Whitsuntide 1886 the church was opened, sadly not by the Canon himself who was not strong enough then for the journey. His place was taken by the Bishop of Ripon. (From a letter of JB to her sister Hatty quoted in 'Recollections of George Butler p.421) Biog: Emile Boss; Aunt Hatty (Mme Meuricoffre); Rhoda (Bolton later Butler).
