Administrative / Biographical History

Lady Henry's retraction: In the 'Shield' of Mar 1898 p.89 was printed 'letter from Lady Henry Somerset to Lord George Hamilton.'

This was written from her place of residence, Eastnor Castle, and dated 27 Jan. It appeared in some of the daily papers of 8 Feb.

In it she makes 'explicit withdrawal of an endorsement in whatever form of the principle of regulation.'

The retraction was welcomed but the 'Christian' pointed out the harm which had been done by her act in encouraging the Government to claim the women of England as its supporters. In addition she caused discord throughout the large and important organisation of which she was the President (the BWTA) as well as the World Organisation (the WWCTA) of which she was the Vice President.
