Copy of a 'Chromo' received from Josephine Butler

Scope and Content

'A test by which to try all measures proposed in which the hygienic question is concerned' 1 May, Winchester.

The LNA as an association composed of women lay down certain principles: 'that under no circumstances whatsoever can we take cognisance of the immoral man who may have future relations with the women whose case is under consideration'. The compulsory detention of diseased women is clearly in the interests of the immoral man who is the main consideration of the proposers of compulsory detention. This 'will be found to be the only safe guiding principle for us' [see letter of 25 Apr]
