Administrative / Biographical History

On 12th December 1981 the inaugural meeting of the Greater Manchester and District Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (GMDCND) took place. The purpose of this new organisation was to co-ordinate the activities of local groups campaigning for nuclear disarmament, to encourage other groups to get started, to campaign in Manchester and to participate in national CND campaigns. A joint committee between North West CND and Manchester Against the Missiles (an organisation which disbanded following the establishment of GMDCND) worked out the proposals for this new body. It was envisaged that annual meetings would be led by a general committee, which would represent all the groups involved, and to which a smaller executive committee would be responsible.
