Alan Paton (1903 - 1988) graduated from the University of Natal and from 1924-1948 worked as a teacher and Principal. In 1946 he wrote Cry, the Beloved Country and gave up his job to concentrate on writing and politics. He was a founder member of the Liberal Party in 1953 and was its President from 1958-1960.
