Press cuttings

Scope and Content

This class contains an extensive collection of press cuttings which chart the whole of RD's career from his earliest days in repertory to his final film. There are very few loose cuttings; the majority are mounted in labelled cuttings books. They document virtually all of RD's plays and films, and also cover other areas such as his broadcasts, various projects which never came to fruition, his general activities, and his home life. There are also more general articles on other film and stage stars of the day, producers and directors, and the theatre and film industry. The cuttings range from notices and snippets of news and gossip to reviews and substantial articles written by well-known dramatic critics. They are an invaluable source of information about RD's life and career, as well as the world of theatre and film in which he moved. Taken largely from British and American publications, there are also cuttings from elsewhere in the world, including Europe and Australasia.

The class is divided into four sub-classes, largely based on format and RD's original arrangement and classification of his cuttings books. FRD1/6/3 is a more heterogeneous grouping, and contains some volumes which may not have been compiled by RD himself.
