Scope and Content

Bundle of photographs from an original envelope labelled "Miscellaneous autobiographical photos". This is a mixed bag of photographs of RD which span a long period of his career, from some of his earliest stage roles to his final film. They are as follows: /1 Head and shoulders photograph of RD taken during his first tour with the Benson company at a seaside resort; with caption (1924). /2 Full length photograph of RD as a marshal at the Scottish Historical Pageant at Craigmillar Castle, Edinburgh, organised by Frank Benson (Jul 1927). /3 Mounted photograph, apparently of RD in costume as Straker in Man and Superman; inscribed to Robin (Sep 1929). /4 Still from the film The Private Life of Henry VIII, showing RD as Thomas Culpeper [1933]. /5 Head and shoulders publicity photograph of RD, taken during his first visit to New York; taken by Vandamm of New York; with caption (1934). /6-8 Publicity photograph of RD and two stills from film The Ghost Goes West; /8 also includes actress Jean Parker [1935]. /9 Still from The Thirty-Nine Steps showing RD with Madeleine Carroll seated in concert hall [1935]. /10-11 Two photographs from the film The Citadel: /10 is a behind-the-scenes shot of filming at Denham Studios. /11 is a still from the film showing RD with Rosalind Russell and Rex Harrison [1938]. /12 Publicity shot of RD in soldier's uniform. Wrongly identified on the reverse as RD in Red Night in 1936, it is in fact a publicity shot for the stage version of The Cure for Love in 1945. Arrangement

The envelope in which these prints were originally stored also included the photographs listed in FRD1/10/2/10. The photographs fell into two distinct groupings: photographs of RD (listed here) and photographs of other actors sent or presented to RD.
