Scope and Content

This class contains a selection of film and theatre magazines which contain features on RD, mostly dating from the 1930s. RD appears as the cover star on a number of the publications, each of which contain articles relating to specific plays or films he appeared in. Providing an interesting insight into RD as a celebrity, the magazines also contain pieces on other stars, films, and plays of the time. There are also numerous advertisements, some theatre or film related, others for restaurants and entertainments, and many for health and beauty products. FRD1/7/15 is a modern photocopy of a magazine, made before the archive came to the Library. The magazines are as follows:

  • /1 Picture Show Vol. 32, No. 826 (2 March 1935): with RD and Elissa Landi as the cover stars and a centrespread about The Count of Monte Cristo, pp. 14-15.
  • /2 A 2-sheet extract from Picture Show (14 March 1936), displaying scenes from The Ghost Goes West.
  • /3 Theatre World, Vol. XXV, No. 135 (April 1936): with RD as the cover star and a feature on the play Red Night, including photographs of scenes from the play, pp. 166-176.
  • /4 Film Weekly (6 March 1937): includes 'Donat Explains', an interview with RD by John K. Newnham, pp. 7 and 30.
  • /5 Robert Donat: a publication from 'The Star Lovers' Library' (n.d. [c. 1937]): a magazine devoted to RD's life and work, including photographs from The Count of Monte Christo, The Thirty-Nine Steps, The Ghost Goes West and Knight Without Armour.
  • /6 Picturegoer No. 373, New Series, Vol. 8 (16 July 1938): with RD and Rosalind Russell as the cover stars and a centrespread showing pictures from The Citadel, pp. 18-19.
  • /7 Picturegoer No. 399, New Series, Vol. 8 (14 January 1939). Includes 'Meet Mr. And Mrs. Chips', an article on the film and its two stars, RD and Greer Garson, pp. 8-9.

  • /11 Picture Show, Vol. 54, No. 1404 (25 February 1950). Includes a page of photographs from The Cure for Love, p. 8.

  • /13 Picturegoer (10 March 1951): contains the concluding part of RD's life story: 'He Follows His Hunches', p. 8.
  • /14 Theatre World (May 1953): includes pictures from T.S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral at the Old Vic, with RD as Thomas Becket, pp. 27-29.
  • /15 Modern photocopy of Theatre World (November 1939): with cover stars RD and Constance Cummings in Romeo and Juliet on the Old Vic Company tour. Inside are pictures of scenes from this play and the others included on the tour.
