Numbered cuttings books

Scope and Content

A series of cuttings books which were numbered and categorised by RD himself. They contain cuttings from local and national British newspapers, theatre and film magazines, and American publications. These cuttings include: reviews of some of RD's early stage performances during the 1920s, and his touring and London productions during the 1930s; more general articles on British theatre at the time; general articles on the film industry; biographical material about RD including his rise to fame, his home life, gossip and trivia; reviews of some radio plays in which he was involved; and articles on other stars of stage and screen. The film-related cuttings are particularly valuable in charting the British film industry in its infancy and film executives' struggles against the American dominance of the industry.

The volumes are arranged according to RD's own classification system, and his volume labels transcribed. The descriptions of content below largely reflect the order in which the topics appear in the volume.
